Improvising Canons

Karst de Jong |Royal Conservatoire, The Hague

This exercise is for two players, one leader and one follower. The leader improvises a melody, which the follower plays in time exactly one bar later, like a canon. The leader trains to imagine the auditive result of his/her actions, while the follower has to be fast enough to correctly recognize what the leader plays, and perform this on the instrument. The exercise can be performed in 3 phases with progressing difficulty:

1) short phrases
2) overlapping phrases
3) continuous canons.
